Key West Information Higgs Beach

 Back to Key West
 Higgs Beach

Higgs beach has a number of elements that you will not find at the
other beaches in Key West. Across the street is a large Playground
for the younger kids in the family if they get bored of the beach.
There is a long wooden pier to the right side of the beach. A neat
thing for the Kids is to take some bread with you. Walk out on the
pier a lot of fish hang under the pier in the shade. Break off pieces
of bread and feed the fish. Depending on your the luck of the day
you can get a lot of fish feeding. There is a rental shack on the beach
to get chairs. But the best thing is you can rent Snorkels and mask also.
If you have never snorkeled before and would like to get comfortable
with the equipment before you go out to the reef and they drop you
off in 20 to 30 feet of water try this. Come to Higgs Beach and rent
snorkel and mask you don't need fins. Walk out to the end of the
wooden pier there you will find a set of concrete steps going into
the water. Use caution the bottom of the steps that are in the
water are slippery, use the hand rails. You will notice a line of
old pylons from the original pier curving around. Snorkel along
it you will encounter a wide variety of sea life both on the wall
and on the bottom. Take your time and see how many different
sea creatures you can find. Remember snorkeling is relaxing take
your time and don't touch anything. Touching will usually kill the
organism. You will see small patches of coral growing never touch
coral it will die. If you are new to Snorkeling you will find just how
relaxing it is and to most peoples surprise just how buoyant you are in
salt water. If you have a problem you can just stand up the water is
only 3 to 4 feet depending on the tide.
Higgs Beach as shaded places to eat. Restrooms and an outdoor
shower. There is also a restaurant right on the beach for food and
drinks.

West Martello Tower is right in the middle of Higgs Beach. It was built
during the Civil War times. Was built to help protect Fort Zachary Taylor.
By the Time it was completed the use of brick and mortar in its construction
made it obsolete. Today it is a beautiful set of gardens open to the public
free of charge. Open Tuesday thru Saturday 9:30am. to 3:15pm.
