West of Key West you will fine an area known as the lakes. It is a group
of grassy flat banks that completely encompass a shallow lagoon. The lagoon
run from Mule Key to Boca Grande Key. This shallow area from 5-10 feet
with fairly clear water even on windy days. A large part of the Lakes is
shallow, so if your using your own boat have good charts. The most popular
dive spots are the two target ship just north of Boca Grande Key. The current
can be very strong during the outgoing tide, so use tide charts to time your
dive. Better yet do a drift dive and cover more area.
