The main feature of the French Reef is its overhangs, swim-throughs,
and caves. These caves are not the type you find on land. They are
just 3 - 4 foot openings you can look into to find there secrets. On the
south side you will find two. Hourglass Cave gets its name from the
limestone column on the inside that divides the cave in half. Hiding
inside you will find large grouper. Christmas Tree Cave gets its name
from the large conicial star coral growing on its top. This cave you
can swim through. You can see both openings from each other. Care
should be taken not to kick up sand with your fins while passing
through. Across from the large opening at Christmas tree Cave you
will see a coral and limestone island. On the offshore side you find a
large cave filled with fish. Up the reef you will discover two more
caves White Sand Bottom Cave the home of many large fish. Plus
Dog Snapper Ledge. North of this area you will find Elkhorn Corals
and fire coral ledges. On the onshore side you will see brain and
star coral.
