Islamorada Fishing in the Florida Keys Deepsea Fishing Charters
One lucky reason for the tremendous trophy fish collection is the famous Islamorada "Hump". Fourteen miles southeast in the Gulfstream a small mountain rears up from the deep within nearly two hundred feet of the surface. The strong Gulfstream current is forced into an upwelling turmoil of food-rich breakers and rips on the surface, visible for miles. This food factory holds a host of resident gamefish as well as being a prime stopover for the seasonal pelagics such as wahoo, tuna, dolphin, marlin, sailfish, and others. There are dozens of shipwrecks in the area. Several are Spanish galleons of the same era as the famous Atocha. Though not as rich, they produced a great deal of treasure. The great majority of the shipwrecks, however, were victims of enemy submarine action during World War II. They still have treasure, the treasure of gamefish that have made wrecks their home. The Gulfstream is the Atlantic's superhighway of gamefish. The only living coral barrier reef in the western hemisphere rims the stream along its western edge. This beautiful reef supports many gamefish as well as an abundant supply of bait. The most popular is the balao (ballyhoo). It is shipped all over the world from the Keys to other sportfishing areas where they are scarce or nonexistent. For all these reasons, the most experienced and skillful charter boat captains have migrated to the Key West, with the greatest number berthed in Islamorada. The best of the best of them call Holiday Isle their home port. Pricing varies depending on boat size and amenities. Half day trips are $375 to $500, full day trips are $550 to $800. Different types of fish are available throughout the year. In April, some sailfish, tuna, mackerel, amberjack, and barracuda are present. Bottom fish and shark are also around. In May, dolphin are out amongst tuna, wahoo, and barracudas along with an occasional billfish, bonita, skipjack, and shark. The months through July offer the same variety with the dolphin tapering off in August. October sees the arrival of the king mackerel and excellent wahoo fishing. November brings some sailfish along with king mackerel and cobia. December through March are prime for sailfish, kingfish, and wahoo. Meet our Offshore Fishing Captains click on left.
