Across the road from Holiday Isle is Florida Bay with hundreds of square miles of water and islands bordered on the north by the end of mainland Florida, on the east and south by the Keys and to the west by the Gulf of Mexico.

Eighty percent of Florida Bay is within the boundaries of Everglades National Park. This is "The Back Country." The numerous islands with bars and shoals around basins of shallow, clear water prevent strong winds from doing little more than raising a chop. There are few days when these smooth waters are not fishable.

Islamorada is the prime location in the country for bonefish and boasts a dozen current world records from the International Game Fish Association; more than the rest of the country combined. (The quality of gamesters seems to diminish away from Islamorada. This is due, in part, to the miles of flats surrounding this area in the Keys.) Many visitors are surprised at the variety of fish available in the back country. In addition to the popular bonefish, you can find a variety of sharks (great sport with light tackle on the flats), seatrout, snapper, redfish, snook, sheepshead and permit.

The tarpon is the star of the inshore gamesters. Its hysterical acrobatics and blazing runs shatter both tackle and nerves. (It will give you adventure memories you will play back for the rest of your life.) Some are around most all year, but the best time for the hundred pounders is in the warm water months of spring and summer. The variety and beauty of the birdlife is astonishing. Herons, egrets, skimmers, white pelicans and roseate spoonbills are the stand-outs. Our living national symbol, the bald eagle, resides here too.

Some of Islamorada's most experienced Back Country Guides are berthed in the shelter dock at Holiday Isle, behind the Welcome Center. You can usually find some of the captains on the dock late in the afternoon.
